I’m not personally superstitious about many things, but I am vehemently superstitious about rolling dice. It started as a joke at the D&D table, but I’ve converted into a man with specific practices over rolling higher numbers in D&D. I have my rituals to ensure my dice roll high numbers as often as possible, including putting a dice that rolls low into my dice bag so it can think about what it did. I also like to let my dice roll across the playing surface, like free range farm animals.
Seeing performers in actual play D&D shows joke about their dice superstitions, I spoke to some of my D&D playing friends about what they do to ensure their dice roll well. Again, none of this is guaranteed to work, but what can they hurt?
Set them with the highest number upwards to “set the tone”
There is a mental practice called “visualizing” where you picture what you want out of life. Picturing it is supposed to help you achieve that goal. Since dice don’t have imaginations the best we can do is setting them so the highest number is facing up. This can also make the position of highest number the most comfortable, like strength training, but for plastic rocks.
Have a consistent team of dice at the table
You can own as many dice as you want. You could fill a bathtub with dice and not be satisfied. but enough of my bucket list, let’s get to the “Team of Dice” method. Keeping a dedicated team of pros to do the heavy lifting is a great idea. It’s ideal to keep the same set all together so they match and materialize success, but having a mixed batch of dice as your go-to team is also good. Just make sure it’s the same dice every game.
Blow on them
Hey, if it works in Vegas, it’ll probably work in your friend’s basement. Blowing on dice is a classic good luck move. I believe the science behind the practice involves your breath chakra coating the dice enough to instill the proper luck required. But I could be wrong, I’m no scientist. Anyway, take your dice in hand, give them a shake, a quick blow of air, then toss those bad boys!
Dedicate certain dice to certain tasks
I bought a set of dice that look like stylized bone, which is why I bought them. It turns out they roll best when I’m running a game and make attack rolls on the players. I bought the same set for a GM friend of mine and they consistently roll well against the party. Scientific method proves it true! So have dice that are specifically for certain purposes. Either running a game, or roll initiative in combat, or when you want to do something silly.
Sacrifice a plastic goat to the elder dice gods
I saved this one for the last piece of advice because it’s so obvious and clearly the best answer. We all know ancient and cruel gods watch over our dice rolls. To achieve the best rolls we must appease the terrible hunger of these malevolent beings. Since you sacrifice a regular goat for Satanic rituals, you’ll want a plastic goat for the dice ritual. maybe find one at your local toy store. I don’t need it because I modified my dice to always roll high because cheating is fun.
